This shift is already reshaping the global beauty market, as evidenced by data collected by Mintel:

  • 39% of Chinese women say they have simplified their skincare routine over the past year.
  • Meanwhile, 36% of Indian consumers report having purchased, or being interested in purchasing, all-in-one beauty products.
  • In EMEA, 43% of German consumers rank simplicity among the most important aspects of their beauty routine.

These figures highlight a growing global appetite for streamlined, high-performing solutions.

The desire for simplification is also driven by choice overload. Mintel reports that 76% of US facial skincare users feel there are too many products to choose from, creating growing decision fatigue and reinforcing demand for products that save time without compromising efficacy.

This movement extends far beyond beauty. According to WGSN's Living with Less analyses and Mintel’s Personal Care Consumer US 2025 report, consumers are actively reducing the number of products they buy while expecting greater versatility, performance and value from each purchase. 

Multifunctional products are increasingly seen as a way to simplify routines, reduce waste and support a more intentional approach to consumption. Beauty brands have understood this and have already responded with hybrid formats, multi-use products and simplified routines. But perhaps the industry has been defining multifunctionality too narrowly.

 

In this new era of beauty, multifunctional beauty is evolving beyond product claims, opening the door to entirely new ways of creating value through ingredient innovation.

For decades, cosmetic innovation largely followed a "one concern, one solution" approach. This is leading to a broader interpretation of multifunctionality. Instead of being limited to a product offering several consumer benefits, multifunctionality can also describe an ingredient that performs across different beauty categories, influences multiple biological mechanisms or fulfils more than one role within a formulation.
