Protecting nature. Powering beauty.

Beauty depends on nature. Healthy ecosystems where biodiversity thrives, underpins our ability to source the bio-based raw materials that make sustainable innovation possible.

That's why we're working towards Zero Biodiversity Loss, reducing pressure on natural ecosystems through responsible sourcing, traceability and biotechnology. We've committed to achieving 100% deforestation and conversion-free sourcing across key bio-based feedstocks by 2030, helping protect the natural resources beauty relies on for the future.

By combining science, transparency and innovation, we're helping create a more resilient future for beauty.

We are making progress

Achieving zero biodiversity loss requires action across the value chain.
We're improving traceability, supporting responsible sourcing and advancing technologies that reduce reliance on vulnerable ecosystems. At the same time, we're strengthening how we measure and manage biodiversity impacts across our operations and supply chains.

Because protecting nature isn't just a sustainability challenge—it's essential to the future resilience of beauty.

The science behind zero biodiversity loss

Biodiversity has become one of the most important sustainability challenges facing businesses today. Scientific assessments, including the IPBES Global Assessment and WWF Living Planet Report, continue to highlight the accelerating decline of nature worldwide.

In response, new frameworks and regulations are reshaping expectations for business. Initiatives such as:

provide guidance on understanding and managing nature-related impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities.

Meanwhile, regulations including:

are increasing requirements for traceability, transparency and evidence-based reporting.

For Croda, biodiversity is both a sustainability priority and a business resilience issue. Our double materiality assessment identified nature-related impacts and dependencies across our operations and value chain, helping inform our strategy and actions.

We have committed to achieving 100% deforestation and conversion free sourcing for key bio-based feedstocks by 2030. In 2025, 63% of palm derivative raw material volumes were DCF, 78% were traceable to plantation level, and 91.7% were RSPO physical mass balance certified or better.

Innovation also plays a vital role. Technologies such as Plant Cell Culture can help reduce pressure on vulnerable ecosystems, lower reliance on land-intensive production methods and support compliance with frameworks such as the Nagoya Protocol and Access and Benefit Sharing requirements.

Ultimately, achieving zero biodiversity loss requires the beauty industry to become nature-aware by design—combining traceable sourcing, biodiversity science, responsible innovation and transparent decision-making to support the long-term resilience of the natural systems on which beauty depends.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Using plant biotechnology, in particular ‘plant cell culture’, we are able to produce active cosmetic ingredients with substantiated efficacy and guaranteed reproducibility while significantly limiting our impact on biodiversity. A limited quantity of plant material is required to produce the active product, removing issues associated with conventional cultivation methods.

Using our fermentation technology, we can develop highly specialised active and functional ingredients for skin and hair that offer strong performance benefits while reducing impacts on climate and nature.

Croda has committed to being 100% deforestation and conversion free (DCF) in our key bio-based feedstocks by 2030. Development of this measure beyond just palm supply chains is underway, with the intention to report fully on % DCF in the future. This forms part of our SBTi FLAG commitment for 2030. We are approaching meeting this target through a data-led, supply chain-focused strategy rather than broad claims; this includes actively monitor deforestation risk in key agricultural supply chains using external tools, including satellite-based monitoring on an annual basis.

A major part of our progress has come from transitioning to certified sustainable palm derivatives, increased attention to traceability to mill and plantation, and ongoing supplier engagement to drive improvement over time. Importantly, we’re transparent about progress and limitations - treating deforestation‑free sourcing as a measurable pathway, not a box‑ticking exercise.
