Native to mountain woods in the Balkans and western Asia, this tree is cultivated in temperate regions world-wide.
It is particularly appreciated in the treatment of venous insufficiency. Its active constituents improve venous tonicity (vitamin P effect) by reinforcing the resistance of the blood capillaries at the same time reducing their permeability. As Aescine absorbs ultraviolet rays it is used as a factor in sun protection. Beta-escin, the main active constituent, has anti-inflammatory properties.
