The origin of the peppermint Mentha x piperita is probably a cross between spearmint (Spicata) and watermint (Aquatica). Peppermint has an aromatic and penetrating smell. Its initially peppery flavour leaves a fresh sensation. Mint was thought to be an aphrodisiac in ancient times. In the Middle Ages it was used extensively in medicine and cooking. In the 16th century, mints were a panacea. Peppermint is one of the most renowned mints for its medicinal properties. Listed in the European pharmacopoeia, it is used in traditional medicine to treat mucous membrane inflammations and to calm coughs. It is reputed to fight against dysentery, fever, jaundice, and urinary infections. It is effective against nausea and vomiting. It is also considered in popular medicine as an emmenagogue, vermifuge, galactogen and sedative. Mint symbolises strength, love, peace, and protection.
