Winter cherry, also known 'Chinese Lanterns', 'Bladder Cherries', and 'Strawberry Tomatoes' is a perennial herb whose origins probably extend from China to the Caucasus. The popular French term "alkékenge", which appeared in the French language in the 14th century, comes from the Old French "alquequange" or "alcacange", which derives from the Arabic “al-kakanj”. In its narrow sense, it refers to the Chinese lantern. Winter cherry has long been used in traditional French medicine. Its fruits were reputed to be more effective than a spa treatment. In Canada, it was part of the official pharmacopoeia and was used against fevers, jaundice, oedema, and urine retention. As it facilitates the elimination of uric acid, it was considered an excellent remedy for rheumatic problems. In the Far East, the rhizome is indicated for its bechic and expectorant properties. It is also used to promote the onset of contractions in pregnant women. Winter cherry symbolises love and is sometimes called "Love in a Cage".
