Anthuriums have become one of the signature flowers of Hawaii. They were brought to Hawaii from Colombia via London in 1889 by an English missionary S.M. Damon.
Native to Colombia and Ecuador, the flamingo flower is part of the Arum family, family that includes more than 100 genera and about 3700 known species, mainly from the tropics and temperate regions.
This plant produces heart-shaped blooms that range in color from green or white to shades of pink and brilliant red. With its original appearance and origin, anthurium is a symbol of exotic beauty.
The flowers are primarily ornamental, but plant has been also used as a natural or herbal remedy, for example in steam baths and to help reduce stress. The flower contains flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins and steroids that serve as a protection against external agressions and bacteries hence its interest in radical scavenging skin care or purifying face care. Some studies also revealed the existence of an anti-inflammatory activity, that can be interseting for irritated skin or scalp.
