Refined Tamanu Oil

Add to favourites
The oil extracted from Tamanu kernels is used in traditional medicine and cosmetics, particularly to treat skin diseases (herpes, eczema, itching, ulcers), and to slow the effects of ageing. In Polynesia, women apply Tamanu oil to their skin to soften it and to their babies' skin to prevent irritations. This oil is also widely used as a pain reliever: massages with Tamanu oil are performed to relieve rheumatism and sciatica. Since 1920, the oil has been widely used to treat leprous neuritis. In 1948, it was at last included in European therapeutics thanks to the work of Mr. Jeanson at the Saint-Louis hospital in Paris. Tamanu oil was also used as fuel in oil lamps to give light and repel mosquitoes. Tamanu leaves are well-known for their curative qualities. They can be infused in water and to be used externally to wash the eyes (in cases of conjunctivitis, etc.), treat the skin (cuts, infections, scabies, etc.), or drunk to stop diarrhoea. The Indonesians use the 'green balm' as much for its healing virtues and to treat chest ailments as for its stimulant properties.
